Anti-snoring splint: reduce snoring, sleep more peacefully

Snoring is not only a burden for your partner, it can also affect your own sleep quality and health. An anti-snoring splint (mandibular advancement splint) is an established, non-surgical method of reducing snoring. At our dental practice in Düsseldorf, we advise you on this solution and make your splint individually in our in-house laboratory.

How does an anti-snoring splint work?

During sleep, the muscles in the throat relax. When lying on your back, the tongue can fall backwards and partially block the airways – this causes the typical snoring sounds.

A mandibular advancement splint holds the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep. This can keep the throat open, so that snoring decreases and sleep becomes more restful.

Who is an anti-snoring splint suitable for – and who is it not suitable for?

  • Primary snoring: Snoring without significant breathing pauses
  • Mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea: As an alternative or supplement to CPAP therapy following assessment by a sleep medicine specialist
  • CPAP intolerance: For patients who cannot tolerate a CPAP mask
  • Occasional snoring: For example after drinking alcohol or when you have a cold

Important: If obstructive sleep apnoea is suspected (breathing pauses, pronounced daytime tiredness), we recommend an assessment in a sleep laboratory beforehand. We work together with sleep medicine specialists where necessary. A splint requires enough of your own teeth or fixed dental restorations as well as a healthy jaw joint.

How the treatment proceeds

  1. Consultation and examination
We check the health of your teeth and jaw and discuss whether an anti-snoring splint is suitable for you.
  2. Taking impressions
Precise impressions of both jaws and determination of the optimal lower jaw position.
  3. Individual fabrication
Your splint is made to a precise fit in our in-house dental laboratory.
  4. Fitting and adjustment
The splint is fitted and fine-tuned. You receive instructions on use and care.
  5. Check-up
After a few weeks, we check the fit and wearing comfort. Adjustments are made if necessary.

Cost of an anti-snoring splint

The cost of an individually made anti-snoring splint depends on the type of splint and the work involved; we tell you the amount before treatment. In the case of diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea, German statutory health insurance may cover the costs partly or in full. With private insurance, reimbursement depends on your policy. We are happy to prepare an individual cost estimate for you.

Frequently asked questions about the anti-snoring splint

Does an anti-snoring splint really help?
Individually made mandibular advancement splints can noticeably reduce snoring in many cases. How well the splint works depends on the cause of the snoring and on your anatomy – which is why an examination always comes before the splint is made.
Is an anti-snoring splint uncomfortable?
Wearing the splint may feel unfamiliar during the first few nights. Most patients get used to it after a few nights to a few weeks. In the morning, there may be a slight feeling of tension in the jaw, which usually subsides quickly.
Does health insurance cover the cost?
In the case of medically diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea, the costs may be partly or fully covered by health insurance. For snoring alone without breathing pauses, the splint is usually a self-pay service.
How long does an anti-snoring splint last?
An individually made anti-snoring splint lasts several years with good care. In the case of severe teeth grinding, its lifespan may be shorter. Regular check-ups help to replace the splint in good time.
