Dental fillings – treating decay and preserving teeth
A dental filling is one of the most common dental treatments. When tooth decay has damaged a tooth, the diseased tooth substance is removed and the tooth is restored with a filling. At our dental practice in Düsseldorf, we offer you a range of filling materials – from the standard covered by statutory health insurance to high-quality aesthetic restorations.
Filling materials at a glance
Composite filling (resin filling)
Composite is a commonly used filling material. It consists of a mixture of resin and fine ceramic or glass particles. Composite fillings are matched to the colour of your teeth and are barely visible from the outside. They are placed directly into the tooth and cured layer by layer with a special light.
- Aesthetic and tooth-coloured
- Conserves tooth substance – less healthy tooth structure has to be removed
- Suitable for front and back teeth
- Durability: approx. 5 to 10 years with good care
Ceramic inlay / ceramic filling
For larger defects or high aesthetic demands, we offer ceramic inlays. These are made individually in our in-house dental laboratory and then bonded into the tooth. Ceramic inlays are durable, biocompatible and of high aesthetic quality.
- Long durability: 10 to 15 years and longer
- High aesthetics and precision of fit
- Biocompatible and metal-free
- Suitable for larger defects in back teeth
Amalgam and alternatives
Since 2025, amalgam may generally no longer be used for new dental fillings in the EU (exceptions only where medically necessary). If you would like to have existing amalgam fillings replaced with tooth-coloured alternatives, we are happy to advise you on replacement using protective measures. The amalgam is removed under protective measures and replaced with composite or ceramic.
How a filling treatment proceeds
- Diagnostics: Examination and, if necessary, an X-ray to determine the extent of the decay
- Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia of the affected tooth
- Removal of decay: The diseased tooth substance is carefully removed
- Filling: The chosen material is placed, shaped and cured
- Finishing: The filling is adjusted and polished so that your bite is correct
Cost of dental fillings
German statutory health insurance covers the cost of a standard restoration without a co-payment – tooth-coloured in the front tooth area, and in the back tooth area with the plastic filling materials provided for since 2025. High-quality composite fillings in layering technique in the back tooth area may require a personal contribution depending on the effort involved. Ceramic inlays are a private service. We advise you transparently in advance about the costs and options.
