Removing wisdom teeth – gently and well planned
The removal of wisdom teeth is one of the most common oral surgical procedures. At our dental practice in Düsseldorf's Old Town, we carry out wisdom tooth operations using modern 3D diagnostics and gentle techniques. Whether a single wisdom tooth is causing problems or all four need to be removed – we accompany you personally through the entire treatment process.
When do wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Not every wisdom tooth has to be extracted. However, removal can be advisable in the case of:
- Lack of space in the jaw: The wisdom teeth have no room to come through and press against the neighbouring teeth
- Partial eruption: The tooth is only partly visible and difficult to clean, which can lead to recurring inflammation
- Impaction: The tooth is growing at an angle or horizontally and endangers the roots of neighbouring teeth
- Cysts or inflammation: Cysts or abscesses have formed in the area of the wisdom tooth
- Tooth decay: The wisdom tooth is badly decayed and no longer worth preserving
- Orthodontic reasons: Before or after teeth straightening, to secure the result
How wisdom tooth removal proceeds
- Diagnostics and consultation
First, we carry out precise diagnostics using digital X-rays or a 3D scan (CBCT). This allows us to assess the exact position of the wisdom teeth and their proximity to nerves and neighbouring structures. During the consultation, we explain the findings, the procedure and the possible risks. - Anaesthesia
Removal is usually carried out under local anaesthesia. For patients with dental anxiety or for more extensive procedures, we also offer treatment under general anaesthesia or sedation. - Removal
Depending on its position, the wisdom tooth is extracted or surgically exposed. The surrounding tissue is disturbed as little as possible. - Wound care
After removal, the wound is treated and stitched if necessary. You receive detailed aftercare instructions. - Follow-up check
We usually arrange a follow-up appointment after about a week, at which we check the wound healing and remove the stitches if necessary.
After wisdom tooth removal – aftercare tips
- Cooling: Cool the cheek from the outside during the first few hours (wrap a cold pack in a cloth)
- Rest: Avoid physical exertion, sport and saunas for a few days
- Diet: Prefer soft food that is not too hot. Avoid dairy products in the first few days
- Oral hygiene: From the second day, brush your teeth carefully, avoiding the wound area
- Smoking and alcohol: Abstain for at least 48 hours after the procedure
- Painkillers: If needed, take the painkiller agreed with us, provided there are no contraindications. No acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin, ASA), as it increases the risk of bleeding
Cost of wisdom tooth removal
The cost of wisdom tooth removal depends on the difficulty of the procedure. Simple tooth extraction is generally covered by German statutory health insurance. For surgical removal (osteotomy), depending on the effort involved, there may be personal contributions for special materials or extended anaesthesia methods.
3D diagnostics (CBCT) are not always reimbursed by health insurance, but in many cases are advisable for more precise treatment planning. We are happy to discuss the costs transparently with you in advance.
