The main cause of tooth loss is periodontitis

This disease of the gums, known as periodontitis, leads to the destruction of the jawbone. The disease usually progresses slowly over many years. The jaw provides less and less support for the teeth anchored in it, until they are eventually lost. On average, every second German of middle age requires periodontitis treatment. This shows how widespread the disease is in Germany. Periodontitis is typically a largely painless process that develops gradually over several years, with accompanying symptoms such as bleeding, sometimes painful gums, dental plaque and bad breath.

Causes, detection and treatment of gum disease at our practice

The cause of the most common gum condition, gum inflammation (gingivitis), lies in the bacteria contained in dental plaque. These bacteria are not harmful per se, but if daily dental care is neglected, they multiply uncontrollably and have a negative effect on oral health.

Smoking further increases the risk of developing the disease. These bacteria can be removed through daily oral hygiene using toothbrushes, interdental brushes and dental floss. Regular prophylaxis, such as annual check-up appointments and professional teeth cleaning, are effective preventive measures.

At our practice, we offer various tests to detect diseases of the periodontium. With the help of bacterial and saliva tests as well as the Periodontal Screening Index (PSI), your dentist is able to detect gum diseases such as periodontitis in good time and, following diagnosis, to offer you the appropriate periodontal treatment.

Make an appointment with us and have yourself examined using state-of-the-art methods, and let us advise you — so that possible diseases can be detected in good time and premature tooth loss can be counteracted.

Procedure

  • Initial consultation and examination
During an initial check-up, the dentist assesses the current condition of your teeth, using, among other things, bacterial and saliva tests as well as the Periodontal Screening Index (PSI). Particular attention is paid to signs of inflammation.
  • Periodontitis treatment in Düsseldorf
For gentle treatment of periodontitis, the teeth and the tooth necks above and below the gum line are thoroughly cleaned. The aim is to smooth the teeth and to free them from hard deposits and plaque in order to preserve them.
  • Periodontal follow-up examination
After around two weeks, a follow-up examination takes place to check the success of the treatment. Normal, regular oral hygiene can then be resumed.
  • Regular prophylaxis and professional teeth cleaning
To counteract a worsening or recurrence of periodontitis, prophylaxis should be carried out every 6–12 months following the treatment. We also recommend regular professional teeth cleaning to free the teeth from stubborn deposits.

FAQ

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis, also known as periodontosis, refers to an inflammation in the area of the periodontal pockets. It can occur, for example, when food debris cannot be removed from the gum pockets.

What should I do if I have periodontitis?

If you suspect periodontitis due to inflamed gums, bleeding gums or pain around the tooth necks, please see your treating dentist. In the case of existing periodontitis, the dentist cleans the periodontal pockets and tooth necks above and below the gum line.

How much does periodontitis treatment cost?

The cost of periodontitis treatment depends on the chosen type of treatment, the number of sessions required and any follow-up treatments such as professional teeth cleaning. We will explain the individual costs of the treatment to you in a consultation.

Frequently asked questions about periodontitis

What is the difference between periodontitis and periodontosis?
Colloquially, both terms are used synonymously. The medically correct term is 'periodontitis' — a bacterial inflammation of the periodontium, the tissues that support the teeth. 'Periodontosis' actually refers to non-inflammatory bone loss, which is very rare.
Can periodontitis be cured?
With the right treatment, periodontitis can be halted and kept under control. However, bone that has already been lost cannot fully regenerate. That is why an early diagnosis is important. Regular follow-up care and good oral hygiene are decisive for long-term success.
Does health insurance cover periodontitis treatment?
Yes, systematic periodontitis treatment is covered by German statutory health insurance. This requires an application based on a periodontal assessment. Supplementary measures such as certain laboratory tests may involve a personal contribution.
How do I recognise periodontitis?
Typical signs are bleeding gums when brushing, red or swollen gums, bad breath, receding gums and loose teeth. In its early stages, periodontitis often causes no pain — which is why regular check-ups are important.
