Tooth decay (dental caries) is one of the most widespread and common diseases of the oral cavity across the globe. Thorough, regular oral hygiene is a key factor in preventing tooth decay. Yet other habits and measures can also strengthen oral health and give caries no chance to develop. Those who follow them lay the foundations for healthy teeth in the long term.
Everyday habits for preventing tooth decay
- Drink plenty of fluids, ideally sugar-free drinks. This stimulates saliva production – and saliva is well known as a natural acid regulator, helping the tooth enamel to recover after acid attacks from food.
- Eat a healthy diet with little sugar, because sugary foods and drinks are the main cause of caries-causing bacteria developing in the mouth. So avoid sugary foods, or consume them mindfully and do not let them linger in the mouth for extended periods. Fructose from fruit or juices and honey are just as harmful in this respect.
Dental care at home
- Brush your teeth thoroughly from all sides at least twice a day, morning and evening, for 3 minutes.
- Use dental floss and interdental brushes. To properly remove plaque between the teeth as well, you should use these tools in addition to your toothbrush. We are happy to show you how to use dental floss and interdental brushes correctly at our practice.
- Use fluoride toothpastes and gels. Fluoride is a proven, effective protection against tooth decay. You can read more about fluoride and current research in our article Vaccine against tooth decay.
Professional caries prophylaxis
- Dental check-ups twice a year. Visit your dentist regularly, as they can detect possible conditions and treat them in good time.
- Professional teeth cleaning. To keep even the areas of your mouth that are particularly hard to reach free of harmful bacteria, you should have a professional teeth cleaning at least once a year.
The right diet, thorough dental care with the right toothbrush and regular visits to the dentist form the foundation of tooth decay prevention. Those who follow the habits described and apply these measures look after their teeth sustainably in the long term and support a radiant smile. In doing so, the risk of toothache, extensive dental treatment or costly dentures is actively kept to a minimum.
