Master of Science in Implantology and Periodontal Therapy
Having already successfully completed a first Master of Science in Oral Implantology, Dr. Pantas — a graduate of the Master's programme of the DGI (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Implantologie, the German Association of Oral Implantology) — went on to complete a new study module in periodontology and, in December 2016, obtained a second Master of Science in implantology and periodontal therapy. Dr. Pantas now holds a "Master of Science Oral Implantology & Parodontology". These internationally recognised Master's degrees represent the highest level of postgraduate academic training in dentistry. Dr. Pantas's patients will benefit from this newly acquired qualification through high-quality implant treatment.
A sensible combination of periodontology and implantology
The addition of periodontology to the curriculum of the DGI programme reflects precisely how treatment options and methods in implantology have evolved. In its early days, implantology was concerned solely with placing implants safely and effectively. Today, this field is considerably more sophisticated and far gentler. Complementing implantology with periodontology has a positive effect on tissue-preserving, minimally invasive dental care. These aspects are particularly important because the focus is fundamentally on preserving natural teeth — and because, as patients grow older, their teeth need to last longer too.
The key areas of the periodontology programme
This postgraduate Master's programme is open only to fully licensed dentists. It focuses specifically on periodontal topics such as the interactions between periodontal and systemic diseases, plastic and regenerative periodontal surgery, and function and aesthetics. In connection with these subject areas, newly available materials and their biocompatibility are also covered. Dr. Pantas was thus able to gain and deepen new expertise, which also makes him a competent interdisciplinary point of contact for colleagues from other specialities.
